SUNDAY, 11th MAY

The final week of the season has seen plenty of action and goals, Irlam confirmed their fourth Premier title in a row with a 5-3 win over Clifton. The runners-up spot is still to play for with both Clifton and Salford Celtic having mixed results and on equal points. In the 1st Division, G  C  J saw off the challenge of Priory Unicorn 4-2 and Queensway held their nerve in a tense final match against Priory winning 3-2 to secure promotion. D L S Coruna also confirmed the 2nd Division championship with 3 wins over 10 days, beating Astley 3-1, Buckley Arms 3-1 and Swinton Juniors 5-0. In the Carr & Hume Trophy there were no shocks in the midweek quarter finals or the semi finals that saw Irlam Railway defeat Fox & Hounds 6-1 and Chestnut Lodge overcome Parkwyddn 5-1 to reach Wednesday’s final.

In the Margaret Piggott Final, the lead changed three times before Salford Celtic finally overcame the youngsters of DLS Coruna with goals from Butcher, Dykes and Hutchinson. Coruna’s goalscorers were Tennant and Doherty.

On the League front, Irlam got back to winning ways with the 5nil thumping of Tiger Moth and Salford Celtic’s 3-1 win over Clifton closed the gap in the runners-up chase. In the Carr & Hume Trophy, shock results continue in the knockout stage with 4th Division’s Mark United and Ordsall beating higher opposition 4-2 and 4-0 respectively and move though to the quarter finals.

ECCLES SUNDAY LEAGUE

In the T J Judge Final, G C J led throughout the game but had to overcome a spirited display from Salford Victoria in an entertaining final by 4-2. In the John Cook Trophy, Charlestown CYC reversed the recent defeat by Tiger Moth in the County Cup, this time winning 3-2 aet with goals from Keith Statham and Ricky Smith 2. On the league front, shock of the day was Irlam’s 6-2 defeat by Worsley, with Clifton moving into second spot beating Salford Celtic by a similar score. In the 1st Division, Queensway stepped up their promotion challenge with Danny Rowbotham scoring 4 in the 6-2 win over Salford Victoria. The 2nd Division title chase continued with DLS Coruna closing the gap at the top winning the closely contested match with Brookfield Villa 1nil. In the Carr & Hume Trophy, results of the day were 4th Division Irlam Rangers’ defeat of local Irlam Tiger 2-1 and Ordsall’s defeat of 1st Division Wellington 5-2.

This week has seen a number of the promotion, relegation and Cup Competitions reaching there conclusions, in the Manchester FA Sunday Cup goals from Brad White and Scott Holt saw Tiger Moth lift the trophy. In the Eccles Challenge Cup, Chestnut Lodge came from a goal down to beat Clarendon 2-1 and complete the first of the season’s league and cup double. In the 1st Division, goals from Colin Eyres and Steve Smith saw G  C  J clinch the championship and now look to Premier Division football next season with 2-1 over rivals Queensway. In the 2nd Division, DLS Coruna moved closer to promotion with midweek wins over Foxes and White Swan, but dropped points after losing 2nil to Lower Kersal Soc. Brookfield Villa completed a easy romp with 11nil thrashing of Higher Broughton, while the relegation battle between Astley and Higher Irlam Soc ended 2-1 in favour of Irlam. In the 4th Division, Clarendon took the disappointment of their cup final defeat out on AFC Langworthy with the 14-2 walloping. In the Carr & Hume Trophy there were one or two surprise results, with Weaste Utd, Ship and Pendlebury Utd all recording victories over higher league opposition and Mark Utd achieving a commendable draw with Lower Kersal Soc.

Both the Margaret Piggott Cup semis went into extra-time, with Salford Celtic finally running out winners 6-3 over Winton after Damien Busutti hat-trick. In the other semi, D L S Coruna overcame their disappointment of losing in last weeks T J Judge semi, going through to the final by winning a penalty shoot out against Tophouse Rangers.

In the Premier Division, Irlam confirmed their position at the top with a 3-2 win over nearest challenger Charlestown. Same in the 1st Division, hat-tricks by Colin Eyres and Mike Ayres saw G C J inch closer to the title with their 6-2 defeat of Wellington. Not to be left out, Salford Victoria’s Rob Faiyez and Kier Jones shared the goals in their 6-1 win over Queensway.

In the 2nd Division, the single point secured by Higher Irlam Soc in their 3-3 draw with fellow strugglers Buckley Arms, saw them move off the bottom spot.

Irlam White Horse’s James Tate hit 3 in their 5-2 defeat of Finn M’Couls. Surprise of the day came in the Carr & Hume when Unicorn struggling at the foot of the 4th Division beat Lower Kersal Social from the 2nd Division 1nil in the rare win with a goal from Stuart Wright.

In the League’s domestic Cup Competitions, De La Salle Coruna continued their excellent cup run again defeating senior opposition Queensway by a goal from Danny Doherty. They join Salford Celtic who won a nine goal thriller against Catholic Club, Winton Wanderers and Tophouse Rangers in the semis. First Division promotion hopefuls G C J reached the Final of the T J Judge Cup beating rivals Priory Unicorn 4-2 with goals from Colin Eyres 2, Steve Smith and Rob Watmough. In the John Cook Trophy, Tiger Moth continued their scoring spree over M/r Maccabi with a Brad White hat-trick and Dave Carlisle ending Maccabi thoughts of a semi place.

In the League, Worsley, Hollins Green, Higher Irlam Soc and Buckley Arms all secured precious points in their relegation struggles. The 3rd Division top of the table clash between Chestnut Lodge and Tophouse Rangers ended all square at 2-2, leaving Chestnut’s last match next Sunday to decide the champions. In the 4th, Weaste United defeat by Ship 4-3, has left the door open for St Bonifaces, who won 8-2 to finish runners-up with the right results over the next set of fixtures.

As the league moves to the business end of the season, a number of Cup Finalists and promotion candidates emerge. In the N W Champions Cup, Irlam lost by the solitary goal in their bid to retain the cup against Greyhorse from the Hyde League. Goals from Colin Snelgrove and Gary Bailey saw Charlestown CYC reach their second Manchester FA Cup Final in a penalty-shoot out with Chaddy End and now face Tiger Moth in the Final on the 17th April. In the league’s cup competitions, Queensway booked their quarter final place in an extra time win over Parkwyddn, Charlestown’s Matty Campbell 2, Staines and O’Gorman scored the 4 in their tough tie against Clifton and Clarendon reversed the recent league result by beating Weaste United 4-1 and now face Chestnut Lodge in the Eccles Challenge Final. In the only Premier fixture, Tiger Moth took the points with goals from Girgenti, Lynch and a couple from Dave Carlisle. Both G C J and Priory kept up the promotion challenge with comprehensive wins at the top of the 1st Division. Chestnut Lodge and Tophouse Rangers have secured promotion from the 3rd, and their league clash next week is likely to decide who are champions. Already promoted as 4th Division Champions, Clarendon can watch the battle for second spot with interest over the next few weeks.

Irlam took another step in retaining their N W Champions title when they overcame Copperpot 3-2 in close contest. The Margaret Piggott Cup provided its usually surprises with Catholic Club winning 3nil away to Clifton and DLS Coruna from the 2nd Division adding another senior scalp of Worsley to their list this season winning a penalty shoot-out 4-2. Chestnut Lodge became the first club to reach a domestic final by fighting off a determined display from St Bonifaces Social Club by the odd goal.

In the 1st Division, Priory Unicorn slipped from leaders to 3rd after both their rivals

G  C  J and Queensway won, and only managed a 4-4 draw against Parkwyddn. Same in the 2nd, while DLS Coruna were on cup duty, both Brookfield Villa and Lower Kersal Social lost 2-1 and failed to increase their lead at the top. In the 3rd Division promotion challenger, Tophouse Rangers increased the gap between themselves and Irlam Tiger winning 2-1. Both top clubs in the 4th Clarendon and Weaste United extended their points lead, winning 7-2 and 2-0. While a hat-trick from Brad O’Neill secured the points for Mark United in a welcome win for the club over Irlam Rangers.

SUNDAY, 9th MARCH  

In the Sunday Cup semi final Tiger Moth overcame strong Clifton side, who were reduced to 10 men from early in the first half. Clifton looked the more likely to reach the final creating the better chances in both half, but goals from Brad White and Scott Holt saw them through to their first County final.

In the league, Catholic Club won 3nil in local Irlam derby, with both Clifton and Charlestown continuing to press for second place in the Premier Division. In the 1st, leaders Priory Unicorn suffered at the hands of Irlam Railway losing 5-2 with Gary Keefe scoring at hat-trick, both championship contenders G  C  J and Queensway had comfortable 8-1 and 4-0 wins. In the 2nd, all three top teams Brookfield Villa, D L S Coruna and Lower Kersal Soc had a easy morning’s football winning 4-1, 6-0 and 6-1 respectively. Same in the 3rd, Chestnut Lodge, Tophouse and Irlam Tiger Kept up their chances with good results. Surprise of the day came in the 4th with unbeaten Clarendon going down 2-1 to the ever improving Weaste United, who they meet in a fortnight’s time in the Eccles Challenge Cup semi-final.
